Mosquito problem in chicken coop

Quote:
Just to note that the Country Vet products I recommended are LABELED FOR USE in kitchens and food prep ares, barns, stables, kennels, dairies and milk handling facilities, chicken houses and I have probably left off quite a few. http://www.country-vet.com/images/label/34-2033CV.pdf

I
definitely agree with attanding to hatching sources such as removing all standing water (or treating it with something like mosquito dunks--once again safe for pets).

We put patio screen over the hardware cloth on all the openings in the coop. We also close their pop door at night. Doing this helps with the mosquito issues we have here.

I put up a bathouse 4 years ago, and finally got bats last year! Man, what a difference. There are still skeeters, but it made going outside at night tolerable, and almost pleasant. I still need repellent spray sometimes, but alot of nights I went without it. Love my bats. But I also do all the other preventitive measures like looking for stale water. Plus its nature working, and not poison that could get in my organic eggs/

When I had my ducks years ago I had read to stick the dryer sheets in the chicken wire all around the pen. So I went to the $ store and bought a box and it worked for me. So now i have chicks and last night was their first night in the big pen but I did notice lots of mosquitoes so I bought me some more dryer sheets to stick all around the pen. I'll put it up high so the chicks can't get at it.or in areas they can't reach on the outside under the eves of the pen.

mine are eating them. The things are in the corner where the tin meets. Since the other two walls are wire they stay in the corner where the tin is right where I wanted the chicks to sleep. I worry about them sleeping by the wire wall since something could grab them through the fence. I have been having to go out there several times a night to get them in the corner where the tin is to keep them safe. But when they see them landed on the wall they sure get them. I have a zapper so going to try that and see if it helps with the things.

the dryer sheets have helped I think but they're still some in there.

I NEED to make some of those for around the pen. I need me a pattern to make some. We have bats here already.

Is there a water source that is attracting them? Perhaps scrub down their water bowl or see about using a lidded bucket with nipples for their water.

I had the nipple waterers over there and it dawned on me that might be it since they are making the ground wet a little with it. So I moved it to the back of the pen where it's wire and it can dry out better. thanx

BATS are also good mosquito controllers.

We bought a bat box to put up on the side of the barn last year, haven't done it yet but we have it ! LOL

Hmm, maybe this weekend /img/smilies/roll.png

As I understand they are very effective in controlling the mosquito population in the area as they are their main food source.

Same here. Our bat house is maintenance free and we had bats within the first year. They have returned every year for the past 6 years. They have transformed our yard and we can enjoy being outside. One issue is the droppings. We solved that by placing out compost directly underneath the bat-o-minium.
