Mosquitoes

Yea I was going to say. And it is a field like terrain. When I moved here it was full of old tires on my side which I removed. It dries almost completely from fall to winter and then when it starts raining in spring it floods up. We also get gators that pass through that never stay longer than a week at a time. I'd rather not encourage them to stick around with more food. They don't stay because they compete with the flocks of sandhill crane that come through and eat the fish and frogs too. It's a lovely little ecosystem there and I don't want to muck it up too much. I heard mention of tablets you can put in the water that don't hurt other animals that kill off the larvae but I don't know how strong they are or if they might kill too many as to starve off the frogs and then the birds. I just want to keep them away from my house, me and my pets.

I'm going to order a pair of Mosquito Shoo Geraniums and put one on either side of the coop. Go back on my garlic pills, feed my hens some garlic (I heard it makes their eggs taste funny though?), and get that mosquito zapper I saw and try that. Will also look into some bat houses the next time I'm at Lowe's. I already replaced their waterer with one that made it more difficult for them to get in and breed. I'd get the torches but somehow doubt I'd think to light them. XD

The skeeter magnets I have seen are actually propane powerd. They heat up to about human body temp and give off Co2. Body temp and Co2 are what attract skeeters. Then the skeeters are killed and fall into a catch basin. Skeeters are territorial and never go very far from were they are born. Thats why they work so well. After a while the other skeeters will figure out they are missing and fill in the gap. But it lasts a long time. You kill off all the adults and of course there is no babies for a while. they do work and work very well. Though I can't justify the price for myself! LOL I use 2 zappers and the chickens love to gather at the light and wait for the treats to drop! LOL I have to unplug it to get them to go in the coop at night.

Good Luck and God Bless!

I checked the info on this one better and its actually the CO2 it gives off - not human specific smell, it also uses a black light-like lcd light to draw them in and sucks them up into the bottom to dehydrate. It's only $20 though so SEEMS like a good deal. I saw one exactly like it at walmart for $40.

I just don't know about that. I paid over 400.00 for mine. And I didn't get the most expensive one I could have. I don't know if you will find something that requires a propane tank and lures and runs by electricity, for 40.00. Its probably something that has been compared to the operation of the magnet. Also, I was disappointed at first, until I realized that I had the wrong lure. And the price of the lure was expensive at the companies web-site, but fortunately we checked on amazon and got it much cheaper. My magnet uses a standard size propane bottle in 2 weeks. But just check on a map where my home town is and try to figure how tropical an area this is....it might be worth it.
I didn't do well with the mosquitoe plant. It shrivelled up and died. Very unusual for me. I can usually plant a finger and grow an arm. But good luck with it.
