I don't think you can go wrong with Plymouth Rocks either. I am really pleased with my present flock of 7 New Hampshire Reds (and 2 blue cochins), considerably less so with the Delawares (all the same age). The NHRs have been great; the Delawares never really thrived. I doubt I'll get Delawares again, at least not from that source. And I'm seriously thinking of getting rid of the remaining Delawares this fall.

I live in the metro Denver area and do very well selling 12-20 week old pullets. I do batches of 25 mixed breeds. I like to stick with dual purpose breeds that do well in mixed flocks and are good in our climate. Most first timers only know RIR and leghorns so part of my job is to introduce the vast beautiful breeds and colors out there. Most people have never heard of EEs but most leave with at least one. My must haves are EE, BR, any color wyandotte and BA. I'll fill in with whatever else grabs me that day. I am lucky to have a feed store an hour away that typically carries 25+ breeds at any time. I clean out the older chicks and save time and money.
I can move 125-200 pullets a year selling them for $20-25 at a profit of $7-10 each.
Start your first batch around Christmas so they are ready to sell when people are ready to add birds in the spring.

I sell chicks on Craigs List. I noticed that a lot of people want the colored egg layers. I have a Cuckoo Marans rooster and 2 Cuckoo Marans hens. One of the hens lays darker eggs then the other. When I bought them I didn't know that the Cuckoos lay the lightest of the dark brown egg layers. The Black Cooper Marans lay the darkest eggs according to books I have read. I have an Americana that lays light green eggs, an Easter Egger from TSC that lays a light blue egg and a cross of the Easter Egger and my Cuckoo Marans rooster that lays an olive green egg. Chickens are pretty popular.

It’s funny I never knew how many people were into chickens until I got into chickens 😂
