i used 9 posts 3 each way . and framed a simple sloped shed type roof.

I think using a post design is definitely more economical, and easier to construct.
I used all new materials, and had about $500 in coop and run.

My coop is about 4x10, not a good choice in dimensions, 4x12 would have been a better choice for using full sheets. I keep 10 chickens in mine, but all they really do inside is sleep and lay eggs. I have 1 nest box inside the coop and 2 in the covered portion outside. Food and water is also outside.

I could have saved some money on the run, since as it turns out, mine free range 90% of the time.

If you are using new or even salvaged materials, go with square/rectangle dimensions that are the same or in multiples as commonly purchased cuts of wood. 4x4, 4x8, 8x12, 8x16 and so on. Less wood waste, less cost.

Building with old pallets works great, too. They're usually in the free section on Craigslist. We're building our llama shelter out of them, and it was a pretty easy process. My next coop will be built out of them, too.
