I found a site selling eggs and BARNEVELDER's are $60 per HALF dozen, BLACK COPPER MARANS are $75 all these Marans I've never heard of seem really expensive, why are they so desireable? are they really rare? What are some of the most sought after/expensive breeds of chickens? Just curious

thought it'd be fun to look them up!

Marans are highly sought because of the dark egg color. You have to be careful buying though because not all of them lay real dark eggs. Barnvelders lay a dark egg too and are more rare than Marans.

Marans are so expensive because we're in the middle of a big fad over the egg color. Wait a coupla years and the price will come down. Barnevelders do NOT lay a very dark egg in this country, and $60 per half dozen is way over the line for them unless they are MUCH more spectacular than I've seen so far.

Where was this site? I'd love to see pics of their birds!

If you just want a nice bird that lays attractive eggs, go with Welsummers. I like em a lot, and they won't cost you an arm or a leg.

Lots of people have Wellies. If you are anywhere near Chattanooga, there's a lady in that area who is supposed to sell nice ones. She's a BYC member -- her member name is poultrylady. You can send her a PM to see if she has any available right now. And lots of people online are selling em.

Welsummers are my favorites. I have Cuckoo Marans and I have had black, white and Black Copper marans as well but none of those laid eggs as dark as my Cuckoos or Welsummers. I sold them but I have a nice BC roo now from some good lines so I need to find some dark egg hens.
