Most unusual punishment your parents used?

Some of the punishments are clever and even funny but others sound borderline abusive.

I too had my books taken away for punishment. My sister thought this was so totally unfair. I think my oddest punishment though was when I was made to go to a party. I used to be soooo shy. This just killed me and again my sister thought my parents were crazy.

That's right. Today you can't hit your kid. I didn't spank my kids (they grew up in the 80's/90's. But when I was a kid we got swatted or if you were really bad - the curtain rod (which usually bent before the 2nd wack) We never got hurt, it was more humiliating........I do resent it though...among other things.

Goodness, we got spankings to beat the band when we misbehaved as children. And, if we did something our parents knew that we KNEW was wrong, well...we got the belt. All of us are no worse for wear...we're all contributing members of our society, and appreciate all we have. So, be careful calling "abuse" - that's most definitely an opinion in many cases.

Ooh, my sister and I most definitely got a spanking for being bratty. My parents hate the "send the kid to his room" punishment, because it doesn't really accomplish anything when they have a TV, playstation, and books in there. So we got a spanking when we were younger. When we were teens we were forbidden to go into our rooms and we had to sit with my parents in the living room all evening.

My parents only had one form of punishment, a good old fashioned whupping. There was no grounding or chores, as one they wanted us out of the house when weather was nice, and two we had plenty of chores to start with. Seemed to work for us, but times have changed and chores is now a punishment instead of a responsibility and whupping will land you in jail.

You are still legally allowed to spank your child. There are no laws against spankings. If you swat your child without leaving a mark then nothing will happen to you. I had a neighbor who was a social worker. On occasion, she spanked her own children and said that even if some nut turned you in for swatting your child's rear, as long as there were no bruises or red marks that lasted for more then a few minutes, nothing would happen to the parent.

I think a lot of people honestly believe that there is some law against spanking but so far, one hasn't been passed.

I was the one that used the phrase "borderline abuse' and I did not also use the word spanking. Spanking is not necessary abusive.

I don't care to talk about MY parents, but, rather, about the parenting of DH and myself. We raised 3 girls, who weren't always known to pick up their toys. THEY didn't listen, so we punished the toys instead, and we would hide them in TOY JAIL. We also had JEWELRY JAIL, MY LITTLE PONY JAIL, and, I think, BARBIE JAIL.
