I saw some posts about this in the thread but nothing all that recent. I'm just starting out (no chickens outside yet) but I'm in a rural area and I know there will be predators.. I see them every day. I get that there are no guarantees that a motion activated light or strobe will work but I was planning to try a light/sound combo. If it works great, if not then oh well... My question however is will the motion activated sound/alarm bother the chickens too much. I don't want them to go psychotic from alarm disruptions.

Hi, and welcome to BYC! :frow

We border a forest and have several solar motion lights around our place. We also have two dogs, border collie and corgi, that keep the riff raff back.

On trail cams and outdoor Blink cams, I've seen several fox, a couple of raccoons and skunks, and weasels. Bear too, but those come right in our yard a couple of times a year for the sunflower seeds or suet they can't reach anymore, but they still come try.

One skunk I dispatched as I think it was sick, standing in the middle of our yard and wouldn't run away when I yelled. The dogs were in the house at that time, thank goodness!

Overall, those solar motion lights are the ticket though! We have none that make any noise. The light does the trick!

My experience has been different trying different motion activated devices. They work at 1st but eventually predators will figure out that they don’t really present a threat & begin to ignore them. I’ve gotten some good pics on my trail cam as different animals activate the lights. I found my LGD to be the best at keeping critters away. I haven’t seen a predator since my LGD got about 6 months old. Prior to that I had coyotes foxes bob cats and mountain lions in the area. I free range all day and haven’t lost a chicken to a predator in a while.
