OH NO! I apologize I apparently missed something. It sounds like there is a sad ending story here. So sorry! One of the hens I lost yesterday. I now have 1 hen that carries the mottled gene but she got pretty shooken up and will probly stop laying. The only bantam I had that made out scratch free was Tuba, my Mille Fleur Mottled hen and was the only one who layed today.
Mike, what happened? Another predator attack? I have been having a time with the foxes here. They would come up and the dogs would see them so the dogs would naturally tear off after them. The foxes would quickly circle around or another one would come up out of the woods and grab a chicken. I caught one trying to scale the 6' fence in with my ducks while the dogs were still out in the woods looking for those nasty foxes. I have since taken to chaining up one dog and when the other goes tearing off after them into the woods I let the other one loose a few minutes later. Unfortunately, I am not always here to do that but the "puppy" can drag his concrete block and is close to where they come out of the woods so I think he would do enough to scare them away while the other dog is off on her chase. Those foxes are brave!
Sunday, I left to get a pair of Silkies and I was only going to be gone for half an hour. I left my mottled and milled out free ranging but I never let the dogs out to stand guard. I came back to a bunch of torn up hens and 2 hens missing, Gracie and a mottled hen. I only got one egg again from Tuba though. I need them to pick back up, I have only hatched possibly one MF hen. Every other chick is looking to be a boy.
