Update 5-
Not a lot to report as we are winding down to winter! I do think that we will have some fertile eggs from the Mottled Cochin... once she begins laying again! We had a cold snap and OF COURSE she decided to stop laying (while the Silkies with no rooster in their pen keep chugging right along). We've had a warm week so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for her to start up again but I'm not too sure!
On the bright side, I ordered some hatching eggs and they finally arrived! We are candling today. Last time I purchased hatching eggs from this breeder, we had a true mottled split Silkie hatch, the one I have previously mentioned. With luck, we will get another like her!

Just read this whole thread. Would love an update. I have a young mottled trio that i can’t wait to start breeding with in the spring!
And am hoping for a pretty black roo from my most recent hatch.

Hola, queria conseguir el color pero no lo consigo. Tengo unos pollos que son parecidos a motas, pero no sabría saber si son mestizos.

Actualización 5-
¡No hay mucho que informar ya que estamos llegando al invierno! Creo que tendremos algunos huevos fértiles de Mottled Cochin... ¡una vez que comience a poner de nuevo! Tuvimos una ola de frío y, POR SUPUESTO, ella decidió dejar de poner (mientras que los Silkies sin gallo en su corral siguen resoplando). Hemos tenido una semana calurosa, así que cruzo los dedos para que ella comience de nuevo, ¡pero no estoy muy seguro!
En el lado positivo, ¡pedí algunos huevos para incubar y finalmente llegaron! Estamos velando hoy. La última vez que compré huevos para incubar de este criador, tuvimos una verdadera eclosión de Silkie dividida moteada, la que mencioné anteriormente. ¡Con suerte, conseguiremos otra como ella!

Tengo curiosidad y algunos pájaros trabajan en los anuncios.

It's been a while! The project stayed a stand still virtually all winter, but it is now starting up again. Our Cochin passed away in a bout of un-diagnosed illness that we had run through the flock... so we decided to cross our mottled split hen to our remaining black rooster. This guy has some flaws (hard feathers in the tail, loose wings), but somehow the offspring he produces do not reflect this AT ALL. They are all stunning. When crossed with this hen I think they will produce some great things!

We had 6 or so chicks hatch from the pen that the mottled split hen was in. And 50% of those are very obviously her offspring who have the mottled gene! I couldn't believe my luck when I saw those fluffy little things in the incubator. I attached some photos of the most pronounced baby (who unfortunately has a messed up leg, but hopefully it will heal) and the proud papa.

The thing that I love about this rooster is the fact that he is so black. He is 3 this year and unlike many black Silkies, his color is still so dark. Not a single sign of leakage or anything, and he has the most perfect skin coloring in general, but particularly for a boy. Everything about him is DARK. Hopefully this dark pigmentation will help work on darkening the combs, eyes, and skin of mottled Silkies and start getting them closer to the standard.

También compré algunos huevos para incubar Silkie moteados de un criador. Lo sé... ¡al estilo de los tramposos! PERO mi objetivo aquí no es solo crear un Silkie moteado, muchos lo han hecho. ¡Es para ayudar a desarrollar el color y avanzarlo! ¡Muchos criadores parecen centrarse tanto en obtener esa dosis doble de moteado, y parece haber un sesgo severo hacia las divisiones moteadas!

¡Mi plan en este punto obviamente ha cambiado mucho desde el comienzo de este hilo! Dado que un gran problema con los sedosos moteados es la falta de precisión conformacional, volveré a cruzar a los sedosos negros puros de vez en cuando, además de ser muy estricto con los crecimientos que retengo.
Una vez que mi lote actual de pollitos del criador y de mis propias crías personales estén maduros, me quedaré con los que mejor representen el tipo Silkie e inmediatamente los cruzaré con Black Silkies. Es probable que las divisiones que se produzcan se vuelvan a cruzar con sus padres moteados (esos son los pollitos que tengo ahora).
Podría continuar, ¡pero eso es aproximadamente un año y medio al ritmo que maduran los Silkies!

Solo lee todo este hilo. Me encantaría una actualización. ¡Tengo un trío moteado joven con el que no veo la hora de empezar a criar en primavera!
Y estoy esperando un canguro bastante negro de mi escotilla más reciente.

Everything was running smoothly! But of course no breeding project is complete without some
setbacks.

In late July, started collecting more Silkie eggs than usual. The Cochins were hatched mid-February and I read that they don't start laying until they are 8 months old so I thought that the Silkies were just kicking it into high gear. As usual I collected them and then set them all in the incubator. I quickly found out, once I isolated the Cochins in another pen, that they were in fact laying quite early. And the unfortunate part is that their male hatchmate - a Black Frizzle - could very well be the sire of the chicks. On top of that, another Cochin that I purchased on a whim with the Mottleds could also be laying.

The potential crosses for these chicks could now be:
Silkie x Mottled Cochin
Silkie x Silkie
Silkie x Birchen Cochin
OR
Frizzle x Cochin moteado
Frizzle x Silkie
Frizzle x Birchen Cochin
