moulting? *pictures*

my hen just recently started losing feathers on her head and neck, she also lost her tail, is this molting? if not, what is it? here are some pictures:

and here you can see that she lost her tail

Im new to chickens too, so I havent a clue -- but are you in your coop/chicken yard barefoot?

She's molting. At least she is rapidly regrowing what she's lost. Don't they look silly without their tails? Two of mine just lost their tails overnight, and they look ridiculous.

Yup, molting. I have a tailless one right now too, she hasn't laid an egg in a month even with added protein!

Yes! She is molting. And the white "stuff" is the shaft of the new feathers with the feathers literally growing out of the middle of it. It is really fascinating. Luckily, she is rapidly regrowing her feathers, some hens lose them, walk around bald and then grow them.
