Our neighborhood is full of wonderful ducks and two white Chinese geese. The male goose was hit by a car and killed over the weekend. The community is trying to do anything and everything we can to help the female goose. I understand they mate for life and mourn deeply. We are all willing to get another companion for her, but I also understand that may not work. Is that something we should try? Do we get her another female as a companion? I also thought getting another pair that she could hang out with, but that may also cause jealousy issues. I don't want to create a bad situation. She is older.......15 years or older. Any advice would be appreciated.

Any companion is better than no companion. Geese feel unsafe and insecure when they're on their own, and even if a new pair doesn't immediately get along with her, she'll feel safer just being around them. That's how goose decoys work for hunters - when geese see what appears to be another happy goose, they'll deem the area safe.

Chances are they'll get along fine as soon as they've had some time to "sniff each other out". Or maybe even immediately. A pair of geese seems like the better idea since the widowed goose is so old.

My Mom had a pair of female geese come up in her yard(long story) and her companion disappeared.
She was mourning terribly(we thought she was dying), so I brought her home to friend my duck(who had companions, but thanks to neighbor dogs, is alone).
In one day, they are eating side by side. It is a temporary fix until we can figure out what to do, but for now, is working great!!
My fear is the duck is male and the goose is female...will they try to mate?? I don't know!

Finally following you all over i have found out what breed of goose, and don't worry even if they mate nothing will come of it, i had and still do an Embden gander who was hatched here by one of my Muscovy's after he matured he mated with most of my ducks till i found him a Toulouse goose for his mate at 6yrs old so he'd been mating the ducks quite a while, it's perfectly okay and no off spring will come from it. Whats really important is they now have each other. Hopefully very protected from the neighbors dog. Sweet of you to take in the goose,.
