I've had mice for awhile and moved to a hanging feeder to try to avoid feeding them. My cat goes out at night and does his best but is too afraid to go out during the day and enough seem to be able to evade him. I've read on here many times about chickens that catch mice but mine have never seemed the slightest bit interested. One time I lifted up a box and mice went scattering in all directions. The chooks cocked their heads and clucked but didn't seem to have any inclination to go after them. I started thinking I needed to get some Buckeyes....
This morning my Red Star was following me as I did my chores. I went to move the dog igloo and mice scattered in all directions. There was a scuffle, a squeak and I realized Red Star had grabbed one of them! She thunked it on the ground about 20 times to kill it, then grabbed it by the nose, tipped up her head and down it went. I am so excited that she's finally realized these things are edible, and can provide her own high protein snacks!
