I have about 8 ducks/ducklings and a few of them keep opening their mouths constantly kinda like they are yawning I can't really explain what they are doing, but it is especially the ducklings. Is this normal or should I be worried?

There is panting, and then there is something that looks like what I do when I want my ears to pop. Kind of like a semi-yawn. My ducklings did it more right after bath time, if I recall correctly.

Any chance you could take and upload a quick video? The way that works here is you take the video, upload it to Vimeo or Youtube, then place the link in the box that pops up when you click on the video icon (between the photo and emoticon icon above).

May cayugas hens will open their bills.. not a yawn or a pant-- if something they aren't sure of gets too close to them. They stand there with necks extended and open their mouths. No quacking or other calls. If they decide it's not a threat they'll walk to wards it. If they decide it's a threat they scrunch down and watch it.

The flock leader starts it and it spreads through the others.

I can trigger this if i wear a different farming hat or a t-shirt that they haven't seen before. My rain jacket still triggers it!

They did this as babies too, especially when they started their fear period.

I just call softly to them until they understand its me.

I think they are trying to make themselves look fierce or scare me away.

Maybe your ducklings are entering their fear period now?

They open their mouth like how I pop my ears. They swim in my pool daily. And I live in Texas so it is about 100 degrees here but I can tell it's not panting. They are a few weeks old and just starting to get their adult feathers.

I've heard, from a reputable duck rescuer, that that's how they clear their ears out during or right after they swim.

Thank goodness! Also, one of my ducklings is having trouble walking. I read that it could be a sprained foot but it's been about 5 days since it started and although it seems like she/he can walk better I'm not positive...
