Hey all. New to chickens this year and I have 6 little chicks around 3 weeks old and we are wanting to move them out to the coop with a heat lamp in there of course but my question is will it be too cold? The week is going to be 60s-70s all week but night temps around 40. We are located in va somewhat in the middle. I just don't want to put them out too early and lose my little flock due to cold. Any advice is appreciated!

I brood my chicks outside all the time. They go straight from the incubator to the brooder, even in the dead of winter. I've had chicks in that brooder when we've had temps in the negatives. They do just fine :)

I put my 4 week old RIRs, Black Australorps, Buff orps, and Barred Rocks out in 10' x 10' room of unheated shop while the coop was being built. Temps got down in the twenties but surprisingly the room temp was 60 degrees in the morning. They handled it quite well and give off a lot of heat. One word of caution... ( please be advised I am new at this also) DO NOT hand any "toys" in area with fishing line... I had hung a few CDs with fishing line and found one of the girls hanging upside down by a foot.. She was pretty slow for a while but has recovered. I was lucky to find her when I did...

Thanks for all the advice they will probably be making the transition to their big coop tomorrow then.

Do you think hanging things like corn on the cob from a regular rope would be safe?
