So this is an odd topic... I just accepted a job offer for a place very far (well, 2.5 hours which for me is far because I hate driving...) from where I currently live at home. I don't make enough money at my part time retail job to afford a house. Or even a down payment. Which means I'll be stuck looking for apartments to rent. That leaves little options for my ducks. I would 'like' to take them with me because I'm a very stressed out kind of person and just having them around is helpful. And also, my parents don't seem to understand the 'get them in before it's dark thing' and frequently come home late and don't seem to care. I don't want to get a phone call in 2 months saying something killed all the ducks because someone forgot to let them in or no one was home.
But, I'm afraid until I can afford a house they're going to be stuck at home. And with my drake's current handicap I definitely worry for his health. (I'll miss the chickens too, but the ducks are my priority pets).
Does anyone have any advice? Do you think it might be possible to find a place that would allow ducks? I was thinking that, 'maybe', I could find a farm there willing to house them and I would take care of them after work. The alternative would be to save up enough money to afford my own place, and then move them to me after, but who knows how long that will be.
Maybe I could try to get a little camera in the duck house so I can at least see that they're in at night. And if they're not, I can yell at someone on the phone. I'd even consider an automatic door if they had a separate area from the chickens... (the chickens will go in and eat all their food, knock over their water, and make that corner mess a huge full-house mess, which is why they aren't allowed inside anymore).
The local ordinances in the city does allow ducks and other livestock so that's not going to be an issue in the future (assuming nothing changes).
What are your suggestions? I know this is probably a no brainer. I've just been stressed out and slightly panicking since I accepted the job about what I was going to do with them. My family just doesn't take health and security seriously for the birds. If I know we're leaving later in the afternoon I'll put the ducks in early and they always say "there's no need to do that, we'll be back before it gets back". And we NEVER get back before it gets dark. Not once.
I start the job in just over a month so there is time to think and plan and do things.
