My new baby chicks will be here this week which means the silkies have to go out to the coop. Temperatures will be in the 50's during the day and the 30's at night. I have a 6 x 8 wooden playhouse that we've converted to a coop. It is tall on the inside (8 ft probably). There's an outlet on the ceiling that I can put a heat lamp on but my husband thinks it's too high to help much. They've been in an unheated garage with a heat lamp on them so far.

Should I use the heat lamp? Lower it to a plug closer? I'm worried about them knocking it down although they don't really get too high when they flap around. Forget the heat lamp and just insulate the ceiling of the coop? My husband wants to cover up the ventilation vents at the top of the coop because he thinks the heat will be sucked out. I've read that ventilation is important.

These are our first chickens and we're a little lost! I let them run around outside in the high 40's and they seem to like it.

Help!!! My husband has done no research on chickens and says it's just common sense. I'm trying to do the right thing for the chicks!!

I don't have silkies, but my chicks were out in a coop at 8 weeks. (actually they were out at 6 1/2 weeks, but had a heat lamp at night until 8 weeks) Anyhow, I think they will be fine with those temps. If possible though, give them a couple days in the garage with no heat lamp, so they acclimate a bit more to the cold before you put them out there.
