Moving to coop at 2 weeks

I moved my chicks out to my coop the day they arrived in the mail back in the beginning of march. generally I prefer keeping the chicks outside, it's been my experience that they fair better, even if it's on the colder side. there is something about being inside that seems to be hard on them. you may be warm enough in your area to use a woolley hen this late in the season, certainly a mother heat pad. I have begun veering away from heat lamps as much as possible, they burn out unexpectedly and are a bit of a fire danger long term.

My brooder is outdoors next to the big coop and since nobody went broody for me, I used a heating pad hen. I confined them to their house the first few days so they would recognize it as the place to sleep and then gave them access to the run at 7 days old. That was late February so not exactly warm out. I put the water near the heating pad so it wouldn't freeze.

As the PP mentioned, they do just fine in cold weather. I'd be mostly worried about overheating the coop this time of year. That's one reason I switched to a heating pad hen -- it doesn't overheat them on warm days so I can leave it on and not worry that I'll forget to turn it back on one night when it's going to be much cooler.
