We have an exsisting flock in our coop eating layer. We are about to start the process of introducing our chicks to the coop. My concern is the food difference. The chicks are 8 weeks now and I'll be feeding them Grower. Of course my old flock is on layer feed. Is it ok for the chicks to have layer feed or the old hens to have Grower feed?

Give them all grower. 4% calcium in layer feed is harmful to the chicks' kidneys.
Provide oyster shell in a separate container for those laying eggs.

Feed grower or chick starter to adults and chicks alike.

Many of us who regularly add chicks to our flocks have dispensed feeding layer all together. It's just too much trouble switching back and forth, so we just feed grower all the time to everyone. Oyster shell free choice for the layers takes care of their calcium requirements and chicks, beyond curious brief sampling, ignore the oyster shell.
