Moving to the hatcher?

I was looking at everyone's pictures of chicks hatching and moving eggs to a hatching bator, but what are the rings everyone has around the eggs? Is it to stop them from rolling around? Could someone help me with this? Is it necessary?

I asked the same thing today and was told it keeps them from rolling around.

No it's not necessary, just helps keep them from rolling around as much.
