Moving to VA?

I have a friend moving to VA and I noticed on a hatchery website that they don't ship to VA because VA wants certain tests run.

What does this mean to people moving there? (thinking about heading that way myself in a couple years) Can an individual move their chickens to the state? Do you need to have them tested first? Is there an exemption for small numbers of birds? Anyone know?

I wasn't sure just what testing they needed as I can't think of a hatchery that isn't NPIP. So basically, someone can move there and bring their chickens, but if they're going to be selling, they need to be NPIP?

I currently live in VA but the laws are decided by the countys. Some countys allow backyard chickens and others dont. You should check into the county websites to know for sure. I know Fairfax County(suburbs of D.C.) does allow chickens with certain stipulations in regards to set backs and property size. Prince William County is in the process of changeing the laws for residents on 1 acre within certain zoning areas. I have ordered my chickens online without any problems, you can order chickens through your local Souther States. I hope this helps!
