Moving with chickens

Hi! Just wanted to pick some brains and see if I'm missing any options. I have 10 chickens, 6 adults and 4 babies. We have to move across the country in a month. Shipping them via express looks like it's about $80 a box, plus the $20 or so For the box, and I love them but I can't afford $700 in shipping fees. Airline is another option, but they sent me this archaic chicken box contraption that it has to be in that I cant find where to buy. Last option is driving, but they'd have to be in the back of the truck in a large dog crate and not come out of the crate at all and really seems Inhumane and I don't know if they can even handle that environment. Am I missing any options?

I cant think of any others. Using cardboard boxes with lots of ventiliation may be worth considering - if you can put as few as possible in each box (legs tied for the adults) they should be ok for quite a while (darkness of the box will help calm them) but if they can be on the back seat of the car (hence you can provide ventilation) they should be ok (depending on how fast you drive

).

It actually looks like I vastly overestimated the weight of my birds, and can mail them for under $200, my next question would be if is 2 day would be ok?

I would drive them. I have a very hard time trusting animals I care anything about to being shipped. Too many people just don't care how they treat others property. Also if luggage can be lost so can your chickens the way I see it and buy the time they're found and delivered they'll be dead of dehydration or starvation or heat stroke depending on the temperatures.

I would drive them, in a couple or three big dog crates, with food available and water offered several times a day, during stops. Have you had the flock testing done for the paperwork? Transporting livestock, including chickens, isn't the same as taking your dog or cat. Mary
