So, my little gals and guys (not sure which yet) are jumping and flying out of their brooder. Will they be okay outside? They have a huge coop thats empty right now. I plan on blocking off a section for them and still have the heat lamps at night.

Also, we have Mallards. Do we count on them flying away and not coming back? Orwill they stay in the spring/summer and leave for the winter?

How old are they now - and what kind of average temperatures are you experiencing? I generally keep mine inside for around four weeks before they ae allowed outside for extended periods or without close supervision.

its in the mid 60's during hte day and about 40's or lower at night.
If thats too cold, what can I do to keep them in their bin? lol....

Chandi R U ummmm a SUPER MOM !!! OMGosh... I have 10 ducklings right now and I do work all day outside the home
and I have a hard time keeping up ..... 5 kids and critters.... can I PLZZZZZZZZ have some of your energy...lol

no, not a super mom here! I stay at home with my crew and we homeschool. Our days start early and end early too.
Trust me, I'm EXHAUSTED by the end of the day.

Can you extend the height of the brooder by adding poultry fence? I use plastic poultry fence (it is softer, doesn't corrode, and there is less risk of injury to me and the ducks) for many makeshift structures as they grow and their behavior and needs change.

I had a wild duck that stayed until fall. It walked with us and the dogs in the meadow. Liked to fly around the house, and was just fun to have. See link for the full story. We had her out in the daytime, but with heat lamp at night. That was summer I must say. Still a little bit outdoor time will not hurt. They will move, which will make them strong and keeps them warm. I would try it for 10 minutes and see how they are doing. If they huddle then it may be to cold. Right now I have baby quails in my storage room. I have an oil filled heater in it in addition to the lamp. This is because we are still getting down into the 20's at night.
