I am assuming this is normal. I'm a newb. I guess it would be MUCH cheaper to get them locally.

It's highly possible that you could get them cheaper locally if you have a breeder in your area. Of course more than likely you will not know the gender. If you are for sure wanting hens, then it is best to buy them when they are quite a bit older. They will cost you more depending on quality and age. I have seen older pullets run anywhere from 10-220.00 per bird.

Or you can buy hatching eggs. JMHO is you get half to hatch your doing good. I set 42 Silkie eggs about 15 days ago and I have 19 doing good so far. That won't be too bad if those all hatch, but you never know.
