Congratulations @shezadandy !! What a terrible mother to kick one of the eggs out of the nest. You must be the first to cross a SBEL with an SBEL. Looking forward to seeing the range of colours they produce! After a hellish experience with the broody, ultimately the incubator saved the day-- and hats off to the Mama Heating Pad idea - great for the limited space in the 1st brooder!! and we wound up with 4 SBELXSBEL fuzzy butts to show for the experience. It should have been 6, but she kicked one egg out of the nest (that was candled before bed and had movement, ugh) where it chilled all night, and then killed a brand new chick by kicking it out of the nest- and I didn't find it in time. As soon as I opened the door she fled and never looked back, and was right back on the roost tonight- never again with her! So, I'm their new mommy. First, here are the hen and rooster (all chicks are from this cross) Gus (RIP)Ethel- her egg is the last one in the middle row.

The BABIES!! Gus does have 13 other babies- 7 are mine, 6 I hatched for a neighbor, but this batch is the only F2 group- I'm eager to see what we get as these are his final chicks. The hope is one of these will become the next flock rooster to continue the fun of a colorful egg basket- maybe the only time I'll actively root for a cockerel! We did get a cockerel from the hen that lays the green eggs (above) as well, so one of them should get the job done. Chick #1:
Chick #2
Chicks 3 and 4:

Yes still no egg from Chuck! Her squats are getting more pronounced and she's holding them for longer, here's a pic:Still no egg??? Boy, she's building the drama big time! Forget Thanksgiving, she may be turning this into a New Year's party for ya!! The egg getting kicked out I can sort of live with. Maybe it did quit and she removed it for a reason, but the live wet chick that had pipped only hours earlier and was clear of its shell- that ... that makes me want to sharpen some knives for broody soup.So glad they started hatching in the middle of the day, and that I had the incubator (that I swore I'd never buy) running on standby If this had been overnight, it could have been so, so much worse. I am very happy with the 4 babies we're lucky enough to have! Sweet little souls... now we just need them to be sweet blue egg laying souls... maybe with a double blue thrown in.

There she blows!!!
Chuck just laid her first egg this morning at 9am.
No hen had been in the nesting boxes until today. I went out to check at 6am and there were obvious signs of someone sitting in nest #3.
After we got back from a doctor's appt CHUCK was sitting in the nest! We got all excited and kept checking back. Then at 9am Chuck noisily walked out of the run into the yard squalling away proudly.
We ran to the nesting box and this is what we found!!
