Mr. Snuffles? What to do? Is she a roo?

Sourland- thank you for telling me what to look for! We have lots of different folks who interact, so I will figure out a way to communicate that info to everyone (without freaking them out...)

Anderson-it isn't easy to do! It is an independent (private) school, and quite a few teachers had been wanting them before I came. We had a director of sustainability who helped us create a chicken committee who met for a year to do research and put together a proposal. After being approved it took another year to get the coop built & create a system for the classrooms to be involved in chicken care! It was a big relief to finally get it off the ground. It helps that the San Francisco bay area has a very strong urban homesteading movement, and some of our families have backyard chickens.

I actually got my own backyard flock in the middle of the two year process, so now I am supposedly the "chicken expert". Ha! Thank goodness for all of you!!!

One funny story- the other morning 3 worried children rushed into my room:

Kids: "One of the chickens is wounded!!"
Me: "I was just up there 20 minutes ago. What did you see that makes you worried? Was she acting funny? Were the other girls pecking her?" (as I start walking out the door with them.
Kids: "There is red on the side of it's head! I think it's bleeding!"
Me: "Well let's just take a look."

You guessed it- the kids had caught their first glimpse of a red ear!
