Have a total of 5, and one has been broody for over a month. I've DAILY booted her from the coop. She seems to take it more kindly each time. But for the past week, she refuses to go out into the run with the other girls. I open the coop door and try get her into the run and she just ain't having it. She'll literally jump out of the back of the door (3' off the ground)...and now I see why. The other 4 will ALL gang up on her and chase her away. These hens are all about 1.5 years old.

So, here's the options in my head:

1. She's not laying it seems, so time to eat her (too soon? :p )
2. Keep her out of the hen house altogether for a few days
3. Force reconciliation (I understand there's some risk of injury there)

Like I said, she's been at this mood swing a month or more at this point, hording the other eggs for herself (not hatching), and thought I could break her of it, but she's as stubborn as I am...and that's sayin' something.

Appreciate the feedback....read some other posts here, and it's the gang activity and the duration of this broodiness that are the primary sources of my confusion.

Trying to convince a hen not to be broody is exhausting -- for both her and you!

Could you consider putting her in a small wire dog kennel for a few days until she perhaps breaks herself of the urge to sit? If there's no nesting material in the kennel, and she feels exposed with no solid walls, she MIGHT decide not to sit since broody hens really like to be well concealed.

Because I failed to take my own advice on kenneling, I spent at least a month this year trying to convince one of my girls not to sit. I tossed her out of the nest box every day; she returned as soon as possible. I think we both eventually just wore down. But, Phyllis is now back to normal, non-broody behavior.

Best wishes with your girl!
