ms chicken is crazy and her egg is weird

My son's dog dug out of his half of the yard yesterday and 'played' with a chicken. When I got home he had one of my Welsummers down and had chewed up the back of her neck and back and part of her wing. I have never seen a chicken in that bad of shape still alive. I rescued her and watched her all day. She was too tore up to live and too stubborn to die. I put her in a rabbit cage under a heat lamp and laying on alfalfa for the night. As my 12 yr old says "its between her and God now". This morning she is not only ALIVE but layed a shell less egg!!!!!!!! Our chickens have plenty of calcium and never lay eggs like this. I guess its the stress. Crazy Ms Chicken!!!!!!!

Well, if she is still alive I believe I would doctor her a bit. Make sure her wounds are cleaned out, maybe a bit of antibiotic? I would worry about the germs in the saliva, and then just baby her. Shelless egg isn't suprising- she had a really bad day.

I agree, if she's still alive she's a fighter. I'd give her lots of treats and love and hopefully she'll heal. Poor girl.

I had a young pullet get savaged by an older hen. All the skin was missing from the top of her head to her shoulders - all I could see was muscle and bone. Amazingly, she didn't seem to be in much pain. That first day I cleaned her wound with a sterile saline solution (1qt water and 1/4tsp salt, boiled and cooled) and rubbed a thick layer of neosporin on it and isolated her in a dog crate (but I still kept her in the coop.) The first day, she just rested. By the 2nd day, she was up and eating, drinking and pooping like normal. It took several weeks for it to completely heal, but it formed a thick scab that got smaller and smaller every day. She never showed signs of infection, so I didn't give her antibiotics and she didn't act like she was in much pain. The skin closed and most of her feathers grew back, except for a small bald spot on the back of her head. She went on to be the first of my pullets to start laying and one of the most loving hens I ever had. She always wanted to sit in my lap.
