I have a white layer hybrid duck hen (from metzer) that is acting very broody and protective of her next box, BUT there are no eggs in the box?? She permitted her flockmate to sit next to her and drop an egg in the same box this morning, but "Buttercup" doesn't have any of her own in there. If she is laying one, she's doing it elsewhere and going back to the box. I can't feel any stuck egg and she doesn't seem sick, so she's not egg bound as far as I know.

When I evict her from the box she runs off with her shoulders hunched and does this weird head bob to the side while she runs. She plays all normal in the water and grass like the other ducks... except she seems a little dottier. She wags her tail a lot more and is always "laughing" with a raucious quack. It's like she's lost her tiny lil mind! I'd think senility if she wasn't only a year old (not even)
And if the gate to the nesting pen is left open, she runs back to her empty nest after she's done her playing.

It's like my duck has a phantom "pregnancy".

Hmm. maybe I should try giving her some eggs and see how she does.... My rouen drake is leaving on friday and all I'll have left are a couple young boys I got FOR breeders that I don't think have the hang of the "job" yet.
