Mud in run, Adding Sand?

Well water runs directly across the coop, one side is higher ground which makes one half really muddy, and the other a bit less muddy. What about putting something like pond pebbles ( if they carry them at westlakes) on the REALLY muddy side and then sand on top of that... and then just sand on the other side? Would that be a better idea than putting just sand on this really really muddy ground?

Sounds like what you need is a TRENCH around the coop, intercepting the water before it GETS into there and leading it harmlessly away.

Really, check out the suggestions on my 'fix a muddy run' page, this and other strategies are discussed at greater length.

If you just add stuff to the run, you will not have NEARLY as much luck solving the problem as if you approach it as a multi-pronged approach that also includes keeping water *out* of the coop/run as much as possible.

Good luck, have fun,

Pat

Drainage tiles might help, though you'd need a ditch or something that they would drain into.

If there is one thing I learned quickly in this forum it is that Pat knows what she is talking about.
Check her page, it has the info you need:
