An extremely wet month caused a really muddy situation in my run. Sand just disappeared. I think, and hope, I've solved the problem. About 50% of the run gets really muddy. For that area I first put down a layer of river rock and tamped it down. Then I made a mix of equal parts construction coarse sand, paver base (crushed stone) and Portland Cement to bind it. Spread it and tamped it. I didn't need to wet it as the ground had enough moisture.
I did this a week ago on a two day dry spell. The Girls like it and they still have 50% of the run as just dirt plus a mulch pile for them to scratch in. It's raining hard for the last three days solid and so far it looks great.
