[My Very First 6 Chickens]

After we've eaten a pork roast or a roast turkey or chicken and I've cut off everything I can get I throw the bones into the chicken run for them to pick clean.

Sometimes I manage to retrieve the bones the next day. Sometimes the bones get buried in the litter and I find them later when I'm raking.

Wow! I was unaware you could give them the bones like that! My girls are only 7-1/2 weeks old. Every morning i take some of their feed and I moisten it and add some fresh fruit or hard boiled egg. Nothing other than that for them these days. I couldn’t imagine giving them meat bones.

The little dinosaurs love meat -- they're omnivores.

I wouldn't give it to young chicks, but a little extra protein from time to time is probably good for them.

But nothing salty or excessively fatty.

I get an extra use out of bones by making bone broth. The mush that is left over from that goes to the chickens. They love it! The only thing I make sure to remove is the bay leaf.

Sometimes I make broth, sometimes I don't. Mostly don't in hot weather since I don't eat soup in hot weather.

Being low-carb has cut my need for broth way back since the days of rice pilaf, Mexican rice, and rice-based casseroles are gone.
