Mulch!

Well! Another LUCKY mulch individual! Isn't that nice.

Jealous!

I used to live in Jacksonville, FL and got free mulch. But, I didn't have my chickens at that time.

Thanks! That's Cowboy! (he used to be Mr. Friz, but he's so bow legged and kinda reminds us of Clint Eastwood. Ya know, smooth operator? He cracks me up!)

Have a good day!

where are you in east Texas? I will find you a tree chipping company, I am in the nursery business , east Texas is covered up with lumber so chips n mulch shouldnt be that hard to find, heck just a few months ago they had a moutain of it going still cleaning up from ike out in conroe!

OK! The challenge is on!

I live in Center, TX. Not the center of Texas, but the city of Center.

Now find me some mulch!

D&I wood products is here, but I don't think they give anything for free.

Thanks!

All of the "last a long time" mulches such as cypruss, eucalyptus, cedar etc have toxins in them, that is why they do not break down as fast. The also don't carry as many bugs and such. Now I have no idea how much of the stuff a chicken would have to ingest before it is a problem, maybe a little, maybe a lot. I know cedar shavings are not recommended for chicks. I think that we all assume chickens are these delicate little flowers that will wilt and die if the breeze blows the wrong way (I do it too). As someone pointed out straw was all there was to use for, what, thousands of years? Not saying there aren't better things. I plan on using the"city" mulch for my run before too long, it is just ground up yard waste, breaks down into top soil within a year or so. When I still lived on the other side of the state, I'd get a dump truck to deliver a load for around $60-$80. Saved two weekends of driving back and forth to the dump. I'll shovel it into the garden once a year, plus the chickens will get all sorts of bugs out of it as the bugs eat the mulch bits.

I live in N.E.Texas and my power company bring me free mulch as well when they're doing the trees on side of highway and power lines they need somewhere to dump it,and they will give it to you free .it works pretty good, has anyone ever used hay.how does it hold up thanks

Not well... If it's wet, it plasters to the ground. I use hay inside where it's dry.

I've got a saw mill in the area. They sell hard wood chips. I think I'll go with some of this and see how it holds up. Sand and some hard wood chips... We'll see.
