multi strain meat bird breeding mix

what a great thread! This is my first time I have got meat birds (just started keeping chickens 2 summers ago so steep learning curve

A fried and I got 103 Mistral Gris - trying to raise them to be as free range as possible - this is a bad time of year to do that but we are persevering.
What do you think of Chantecler over an MG? Or BCM? They are 4 1/2 weeks old now and we are thinking of keeping some of the females back for possible breeding.

Any insights would be great thank you!

Have any of you guys tried fermented feed for your meat birds??? I highly recommend it! The "Fermented Feed for Meat Birds" thread has all the info and people there to answer any questions.

I get wheat, barley, and pea/bean screenings and I ferment them in the summer, they ferment fast in the heat, I also get some fermented grains from a local brewery, I'm a big fan of fermented foods, and so are my birds!!

I have been feeding fermented feed now for about 3 months to all my birds, I also highly recommend it, and that thread does have alot of great info, I ferment my layer feed, and I also ferment scratch for them and the ducks. I have noticed a marked improvement in birds and in the eggs I am getting from them as well.

Fermented feed does make for some beautiful and healthy birds, not to mention making your feed go further. Mine give me a bad look if they have to eat plain ol' dry food. lol

Yesterday I hatched a Red Ranger and a couple Cornish Rock X Dark Cornish chicks to add to my project flock... CR X DC chicks just look like Cornish Rocks at same age.. I will be keeping track of growth rates. I'm hoping to have better growth that duel purpose birds but, less than CR.
Update on chicks. Red Ranger chick was hatched larger than the Dark CornishXCornish Rock. I would attribute this to the fact that the Cornish Rock was a pullet and the 2 eggs of hers that hatched were smaller eggs. We are now a little over one week old. The Red Ranger chick is now in the middle of the pack and has more feathers than rest of chicks. The largest chick is one of the DC X CR crosses. Said chick is also the least feathered. The smaller of the DC X CR has a bit more feathers than the larger sibling. I do not have any Duel Purpose chicks at this time to compare them to but, I did hatch another small batch of Red Rangers and I have to say I couldn't believe how much first batch of chicks grew in one week! So far I am happy with experiment...

when referring to a cross the cock would come first, you have in one post CXxDC and in the other you say , DCxCX, so its a little confusing?!?! You see its important to know which is the sire and which is the dame because you get different attributes in the offspring depending on which direction you breed, for example, CXxDC chicks would look much different than DCxCX chicks just a FYI to keep the breeding strait and repeatable.
