multi strain meat bird breeding mix

Has any one tried breeding different strains of broilers? For example...CX X rosambro or Red ranger X CX and them maybe breed the offspring together or how about pure DC X CX cross RR X Rosembro I would think instead of trying to breed "hybrid" birds that don't breed true together breeding fast growing broilers that share very little heritage together should (it seems to me)_ create some vigor and although you would have to keep some parent birds the offspring should carry the positive traits of the different strains,correct me if I.m wrong ,because this is something I would like to try. as it stands now the breeds I have are DC,PR,RIR,WR,and then I have also CX and RedRanger,but am planning on getting rosambros and possibly some "heritage white from S&G,what do ya think?

The subject of raising your own meat birds must of gotten old...ok I guess I'll just do it and find out myself,and let YOU know the out come

Looking at your varieties, I would probably try the Dark Cornish and the RedRanger for my own personal mix. We eat mostly white meat in our house. I read that the pure Cornish are a double breasted bird, so that would be in the mix for sure. RedRangers grow faster than the regular breeds, I think. Eat the small ones and the breed the big ones to develop a self-sustaining flock with decent growth rate and carcass size.

That is assuming that the RedRanger is a meat type bird like the Freedom Rangers, Black Broilers, etc. that everyone here talks about, there are so many varieties of these that it is hard to keep track. Take longer to grow than a Cronish X, but less time than a dual purpose breed, right?

Perhaps what you meant to say was that you would sure like it if the offspring carried the positive traits of the different strains. There is no "should" about it. They might inherit the positive features, they might inherit the negative features

why do you think they might inherit the "negative" features, what negative features are you referring to? from what I understand f2 or f3 etc. could display some recessive genes that may not be something positive but with fresh unrelated genes there is genetic vigor so most of the offspring SHOULD (not "will") have some positive traits if not a lot of them. Also I have some Delaware eggs coming on Friday they're from "Rushlanepoultry" out of S.C. to throw into my mix.

Read my BYC... I am content, and so are my buyer's-- with the Cornish that I produce as a sustainable meat bird.

I'm not sure why I just read your page,it didn't tell me anything I don't already understand. I find it funny how when ever I read about some one wanting to breed there own meat birds some one on here is telling them its a waste of time or its cheaper to just buy them,or they should just go with DP birds. If talking about breeding homemade meat birds is irritating to you then don't reply Ive read on many threads when people ask about this subject you send them to your BYC page,for some it may be informative but to me its annoying because I want to talk chicken not read someones page cause they think I'm some kind of uneducated moron. Soooo,if anyone has tried any of the crosses I mentioned,and would like to share there ideas or experience then lets talk chicken!

You obviously didn't read the part about our Cornish, or my meat bird experiement. Keep reading-- all the way to the bottom...Or the dozens of hatching eggs and cornish chicks I've sold to people this spring wanting their own meat bird cross.

I did read the whole thing,there again you obviously think I'm a moron,I seen your breeding plan but the topic of this thread is breeding different strains of broilers together,I'm not wanting to sell hatching eggs or broiler chicks just curious if any one has tried this...and if a person can get a good meaty bird or a least parent birds that would produce a decent broiler. I understand that using BQ DP's and BQ Cornish as terminal sires is the way to go but most people have access to these various strains of broilers more so than BQ Cornish.I understand the multiple lines of birds it takes to create a broiler here's a good site to check out for those of you who don't understand the complicated process it takes to actually breed CX's http://www.chicken.org.au/page.php?id=5http://www.chicken.org.au/page.php?id=5 so I'm going ahead with this little project and I'll keep everyone updated as the process goes on...by the way I do have BQ Cornish and I am planing on maybe using them later down the line but I deff. want be improve my Cornish flock before I use them in a meat bird project.The way I see it,all the hard work has been done by the big boys now to find a couple of different lines or strains of broilers that are far enough apart genetically to produce a decent broiler...even if you have to keep some parent breeders
