ok first off I do have mites. Not sure how since I have been so on top of prevention but I saw a couple on one of the sick birds. I can't find any on the other but everyone is getting treated. It looks to be mild enough though that this should not be the problem.
I have one dead buff orpington. Was fine this morning. Being her usual rebelious I won't stay in the coop self. This evening she is dead in the nesting box. She is roughly a year and a half. does not seem to be egg bound. Was not broody. No injuries. Found no mites. Crop looked ok. No poo on feathers at all. Feathers were clean and looked good. Legs looked good. No sores on feet. Purple comb. I would think any that are already dead would have a purple comb though. No change in food. Had roughly 50 gallons of fresh water available. I just have no clue.
I also have a second one stubling about. It is a bantam. It can no longer stand. No obvious injuries. No change in feed. Fresh water. Does not free range like the other one did though. It has the opportunity and chooses not to. It does have what looks to be a mild case of mites. I saw a couple but again none on the others. I have treated for mites. The crop does look hard though. I had one other come down with an impacted crop just this last week. A bit of warm water, massage and some time upside down and the problem seems to be gone.( smelled horrible) I am trying everything I know for this other birds and nothing is working.
Any idea what could be causing this impaction issue. The bantams are in off ground cages and cannot get long grasses, string, bags, plastic. Really anything but what I give them unless they take the opportunity to range. This particular bird has refused to do so. I would love to save this one if possible. It is my sons birds and he is wicked upset and expecting mommy to perform a miracle for him. I looked up what to do and have been doing that. The only thing I have not attempted is surgery. I about passed out looking at the pictures and reading how to do it.
