My husband and I bought a house 2 months ago that came with 8 chickens and 3 ducks. We do not know their ages or anything about their history. We have been trying to get up to speed on proper care for them. A couple of weeks ago we started seeing chickens with some vent gleet, so we washed them and fed them yogurt, put apple cider vinegar in their water. Since then we have had chickens becoming more sick and are really in need of some advice.

Chicken #1 (RIR): 2 weeks ago we noticed she had vent gleet, when she bent over to eat yogurt we were feeding her some clear liquid came out of her mouth. We isolated her in the garage. Her crop was not going down overnight, but we were not sure if it was impacted or sour (we have read the guide to determining which is which on this website may times). Since then she has had green liquid poop, lots of watery poop, and sometimes yellow poop that looks like cooked eggs. She stands puffed up most of the time. In the past couple of days, her tail has been droopy. Her crop issue has continued and a couple of days ago she was expelling a lot of clear liquid out her beak again when bending over. She sometimes sounds a bit wheezy when she breathes. We do not have any idea when she last laid an egg.

Chicken #2 (RIR): About 1 week ago we noticed this one also had yellow discharge coming from her vent and sticking to her feathers. We put her in isolation too. She sometimes has normal looking poop, sometimes big white or yellow splats, this morning she had loose green poop similar to the first chicken. She has really not shown any other symptoms, she still acts completely normal, her crop is normal. We’re not sure about her eggs since we caught her one day eating one she had just laid. We were able to grab it from her and found that the shell was wrinkled. We had gotten a couple eggs like this before but were not sure who they had been coming from. We don’t know if she has laid any more since she probably would have eaten them.

So the first 2 chickens we treated with Safeguard paste for 5 days. The first couple days I think our dosage was a little light while we were still trying to figure out how much to use. We also treated them with corid in the water for 5 days. Neither seemed to help. Since the first chicken had gone downhill lately, we got concerned about her crop again, and we’ve been giving her miconazole orally and on her vent. We’ve also been giving olive oil to try to help with the crop. She does seem to be improving a bit the past couple days and has been eating her normal chicken feed. Previously we were feeding her mainly yogurt. We’ve switched them both to apple cider vinegar water since finishing the corid.

Chicken #3 (buff orpington): She was acting completely normal yesterday. She has been laying daily and laid yesterday too. We have noticed her sneezing in the past. Just this morning she would not leave her roost. Her breathing sounds heavy. She has yellow vent gleet. We took her off the roost and she has been just standing in the coop, puffed up.

We have been so confused about whether the chickens were having the same issue or if the first one has a reproductive disorder and the second just had a touch of something, but now with the third one sick we don’t know what to do. We have been trying to avoid using a vet but since we have the third sick one we would be willing to try to seek out a fecal float test, but that won’t be until Monday. We are really wondering what to do for the third chicken since she has gone downhill so fast and nothing we’ve tried for the other two has seemed to work. I will add some pictures after posting.

Adding pictures. Not sure what order they will be in. The poop in the wood shavings is from chicken #1, that was about the worst of the cooked egg poop. Now she typically has more liquid and green. The poop on the concrete is from chicken #2 when we first brought her in. There is a picture of the yellow vent gleet on chicken #2 that caused us to bring her in and a picture of chicken #1 looking sad and puffed up with droopy tail, as she has the past couple days.

Hi,

For the past week, I have had the same issue, same symptoms/poop with my hens. Last week one hen past, yesterday another, now today I have another hen that I believe is passing. Have you gotten any answers?

Going through similar situation and I’m hoping it’s not bird flu. I lost one and was hoping she was just egg bound for sake of the flock. But today one is starting with same symptoms and similar to those you mention. We’ve tried ACV, garlic, probiotics. Now we are going to try medicated food with some electrolytes. We are at a loss too of what it could be. I have another thread going questioning too. Best of luck!
