Mumsy's Romantic Garden Advice

Your drip irrigation barrel......do you run a soaker hose from it and just turn on when you need crops watered?

I have 1/4 inch drip irrigation lines running through the beds, attached to one of 2 rain barrels. I fill them with the hose (metal roof, no gutters, too much pollen to use rainwater.) Got the "starter set" from the Drip Store on line. It works really well. Water goes just where you want/need it.

The images of the morning glories are beautiful. So vibrant!

I've got my hands full with twenty five Silkie chicks hatched over the past week. I almost forgot that my little county fair starts this week! I looked over the premium book and decided to enter a bunch of things from my potager garden. I haven't groomed anything in particular to put on exhibit. Just going out there tomorrow and pick what looks peak and uniform. I used to enter things in the fair with my two youngest daughters when they were very young. I was superintendent of horticulture for two years. It was very stressful. I stopped doing it a long time ago. This might be fun though with little to no stress since there was no plan. Last year I walked through and was disappointed on the small number of entries. This year has been so good for gardens, entries may be better. I'll go to the fair opening day and take pictures.

Last year it looked like this:

My carrots and leeks might be contenders for blue ribbons this year. I'll let you all know how it goes.

Last year I wandered through all the barns. I love the smells of the fair.

I have several colors of morning glories

Sorry for the pic overload, to me they are like chips, you can't just pick one! lol

I love morning glories too!

Here is one of my own. I am calling it Blue Flamingo. Showed up in my yard about 5 yrs ago. I had been hybridizing some of my morning glories but not sure if it was from that or a single mg that morphed into a hidge type. It is much bluer than the picture shows but has that pink in the middle. The seeds all come true.

Here is another one of my favorite MG (not my creation) Gypsy Bride

They are all so lovely, but aren't they poisonous to animals?

Kass, such amazing photos of one of my favourite flowers

My chickens walk all around and in and through them, they are all over the same area my chickens are in, no chicken has ever been hurt by them, they don't eat them at all not even a curious nibble. I do not know if the plant is or which parts may be poisonous, or if they are how (I mean some things listed as poisonous they would have to eat pounds of the stuff or the roots to even get sick other things if you take a nibble and your dead) However I do know the seeds are hallucinagenics

I thought I read somewhere that they were toxic to livestock (goats, sheep, horses and cows). I'm not sure if a stoned chicken would be funny or sad! It makes me giggle at the thought but I would feel bad if it actually happened!

It is very possible, but most animals that make a living browsing, and have plenty to browse from have a built in something that keeps them from eating most poisonous plants. I would think if not poisonous then at least not tasty b/c nothing no insect even bothers them

I thought it was the seeds that were toxic not the plant?

Quote: No one go eat the seeds now ;)
