Mumsy's Romantic Garden Advice

Very yummy Mumsy! I think Maypop is the local name for it. Some say it grows everywhere, but I don't recall seeing it anywhere.

I will try to get upload the photo this weekend. Spent all afternoon trying to get the kindle fire my daughter bought to work with our Mac. Boy I am exhausted, it just makes me love Apple more, so user friendly.

I wonder if anyone can tell me what is wrong with these zucchini plants and what this weed is.
The zucchini have not grown or fruited very well. I had carrots in this bed, last year, and they got nasty black tunnels & holes in them--only in the very top of the root. I'm thinking it's more likely disease for the zukes, rather than pests, but I am a new, not great gardener.

The weed has green "berries" on it and they have looked purple to me, but now seem to just be green.

I DO do OK with asparagus. Here is my main bed-4 x 8 feet. The fronds are about 8 feet tall, if they didn't bend over. I "corral" them with pvc pipe to keep a path between beds.

I don't know for sure but it looks like a boring insect may have tunneled into the stem and rot set in.

This looks like Eastern Nightshade. Google more pictures of it and see if it is the same plant. There are a few types that grow something like this. I get it in my garden on occasion. Carefully remove it and don't put it in the compost pile. It is on the list of deadly plants that kill. Spreads by seeds from the berries. Children get poisoned by this plant because of those berries.

Lucky you!!! One of my favorite vegetables and I have no success growing it.

This vine is considered a choice greenhouse plant here. Doesn't winter over when I've tried growing it. Very expensive plant when you can find it here in the nurseries. So pretty!

I think we should keep the recipes here! (I can follow ONE thread!!!) I think they fit right in :D

You're making me hungry for enchiladas! I just had my hubby pick up some tortillas :D

Lowen, yes you probably have squash vine borers. If you look at them there might be a larva in them still, a white smooshy thing. It might be two late though, I know we only have two cycles of them here. Agree the other is the nightshade though I don't do anything other then pull it out of the ground. I love your set up for the asparagus! I will have to steal the idea.

I have plenty here I could dig up for you! It is really getting out of control. Luckily it does die back all the way in the winter so I can clean up the whole area where it grew.

Mumsy I am going to re pot those angel trumpets today. Do you think I should was the pots with a little bleach after I empty them to kill any left over critters in it also? Or might it cause more harm? My mom thinks it might kill the plant if there is any residue left. And can I dump the dirt in the hens runs? I know it has spider mites but they are the plant version so I wouldn't think they would harm the birds?

I pulled up the Zukes and the nightshade and put them in the "disease" compost--where only squirrels, etc. have access...no chickens. Thank you for the ID. I googled eastern nightshade and they look just like mine. I'll keep those suckers pulled up from the get-go next year.

Yippee! I got them off my phone with almost no trouble! The first two are of the tomato stands they used at the MD state fair. I think we will be trying it out next year. The third photo is of a rose bush at Hershey Park with HUGE rose hips! I should have picked one, but I have no idea how to grow roses from the seeds. I might have to look and see if Hershey gardens sells their roses hoping I can find it there.

Armor not sure about bleach, but if you had bugs in your pots I would wash them with soap and water at least.

oh, I found my Mid Atlantic gardening book again my MIL gave me years ago. I found some really nice plants in it that others might like. I will try to write a list out so I can post it on here. It gave you sun requirements, water requirements, where they had food for wildlife, whether it was native or just naturalized, if the flowers were good for cut flowers and a few other pieces of information that I can't remember right now. I also found this site when I was searching for native plants. http://www.wildflower.org/plants

Soap and water and an old brush is what I use. I get those toilet bowl brushes at the dollar store and keep one in the greenhouse and one in the barn.
They come in handy for scrubbing stuff out.
