Murderous chickens

i've had this happen a few times in the last 13 yrs i've been keeping chickens, i had a EE that we called hitler because she killed her 2 brothers, that's why i free range my chickens so they can get away from each other

they are free range during the day, just at night they have to be kept safe from dingos, snakes and other assie wildlife

thanks for the info about prolapse. my little sis took it suprizingly well, that said thow we are going to go see if we can get another replacement chook

thanks again

Quill,

I would think the plastic might melt and catch fire... I was thinking of a red LED. The LED won't cost much at all to run all night and there will be no heat whatsoever. If you can't get a LED, how about a red Christmas light?

When I was young we had a neighbor that raised chickens in a confined area. He would put a red light on them so they would not peck each other if they had blood on them. Maybe some of you have experience with this and can tell me for sure if this works. Quill, if you try it let me know what experience with the red light you have.

Thanks,

mbu

It is sad about your chicken that got killed. But this sort of thing does happen. We learn as we go. Don't be afraid to ask questions here, no matter how stupid you might think they are. To some extend we have all been there at one time or another. When I started out with chickens, there was no information for backyard chicken keepers. Everything was directed toward 50 plus chickens. Thank goodness my grandmother was still around and I could ask her all my silly questions.
If you want to, you can bathe your chickens to get them cleaned up. Mine seem to like a nice warm bath and they also like being clean. Just make sure they are nice and warm afterwards. If I bathe one of my chickens in cool weather, I make sure I dry her really well. Some of them love the hairdryer.

From what I've gathered bart of the inside of the I guess you could say egg canal, come out. It is dangereous if not fixed... you could search it for more details and pics

I found one of my hens today had been HORRIBLY picked at (while I was at work). She is younger, and long story short, was weaker, so had been staying inside the coop (her choice) while the others would free range out in the yard. it seemed that she was getting better, but today, I see her back end looks like it got a bite taken out of it. It could only have been the other hens picking at her (because they are locked in a fully enclosed cage when I am not around to supervise), but it looks like a cat-sized animal took a bite out of her

I have to think she is in incredible pain, but she came out in the yard and is eating and drinking. I have her separated from the others, but can not stand to think she's in pain. Is it possible she can recover from this? If so what can I do to ease her pain? I will have her put down if that's best.
