Murray McMurray vs. Sandhill Preservation - which one would you choose

it took 3 shipments to get my BLRW for MM, I've never had a full box of dead chicks before and never want it to happen again,no more big hatchery's for me. as for Sandhill I've gotten chicks from them for 3 years, evey one I've gotten has been great, plus ive gotten turkeys none dead all good quality. the only thing is don't be in a rush, also the barnyard special is great you never know what you getting it came be anything.

MMM comes highly recommended in this area.

I just received my order from them last monday. All were healthy and are doing great. I lost one black silkie the first day, because it got cold. They are all growing fast and already starting to feather out in some places. The coloring on the BLRW is really pretty. I can hardly wait to see my polish in full feathers.

I've purchased from MMM three times.

The first time was great, 25 chicks plus a rare free polish. All lived.

Second time, I ordered 50 chicks. They ran out of one breed, and just didn't ship it. Gr. Out of the 4 Polish I bought. 2 were dead on arrival, one just wasn't there, and one died a few days later.
I also lost an EE, a SLW, and a GLW. We called them and the are always very nice and helpful, and have no problems with refunding money. In my case I really wanted the chicks they didn't ship. So we reordered 25. Which we got all free, for the ones they skipped, and the chicks that had died in the previous order. I also got a free partidge Cochin.

All were healthy and alive. Although one was dropped like 3 days later, a very short ammount. And died. So I'm not sure if it was from the small fall, or just the shipping.

Overall I like their business and service, they have lots of breeds. But as I've done chickens longer. I realized their stock isn't the best for breeding. So from now on I will be buying hatching eggs from small breeders.

If there is any way that I can help the BARNEVELDER breed I already am doing it!!!!

Barnevelder (CB): I first saw a black and white photo of these in 1975, then spent the next 15 years looking for them. The first ones that I found were picture perfect to the APA Standard, but layed a very pale, almost not brown egg (a serious defect in this breed). Should be a dark chocolate brown egg. The second flock I located looked good but didn't lay well and didn't lay a very dark egg. The next flock layed a dark egg, but layed very few eggs and had no resistance to any pests or disease. I have found other flocks and strains and have tried to improve both egg color and vigor as well as trying to improve disease tolerance. After 15 years of work crossing all of these strains, I have some nice, dark egg layers that lay fairly well. The males, for the most part, look up to APA standards. The hens still do not. Please only request these if you are interested in working toward perfecting this breed and you are not interested in showing them at this point as they are not up to show quality yet. This breed, as it stands now, is for the person who wants a calm chicken that lays a deep brown egg. Chicks $4.00 each (15) (Sold Out For The Entire 2009 Season)

Have a nice day

I received my order from Murray McMurray on Monday, 4-20 just like I ordered. My chicks are all healthy & nice looking. They do not have any deformities or illness. I am very happy with my new chicks. I have heard that most of MM birds are not show quality, which is just fine with me as I don't plan on showing them anyway. If I want to imrove my flock, then there is a local man who raises show quality Dominiques & i would get chicks from him!

We ordered ducklings from MM last summer and were very pleased, so when we decided to order chicks this year (and we wanted a varity of sexed chicks) we decided to go with MM again. They seem to be the only hatchery I could find that sexed Golden Polish which is what my son really wanted. Our shipment was to arrive week of 4/13. They arrived to our post office 4/14. 2 DOA, 10 others so dehydrated and stressed they didn't make it, MM replaced all 10 plus 1 extra and added 13 red star roos for warmth. They shipped that next Saturday and arrived at PO Sunday 4/19. All were safe and healthy, and all still doing well.

I lost about a third of an order from MM that shipped in very cold weather. Mostly my fault for having them shipped that time of year. But the MM rep said all shipments go out on Saturday, which I don't like.

I hope never to need/want to have chicks shipped again. But I would use Ideal if I wanted hatchery stock shipped, simply because we are both in the South.

You guys do know that Sandhill is a regular contributor here, right? I wouldn't hesitate to use them. But understand that they are a fairly small family operation and MM is a huge commercial one.

my chicks came from McMurray (thru my local feedstore)...and they are lovely...

however, the feedstore bought 50 and I think 2 were dead on arrival and one died a day or two later...

They had ordered barred rocks, buff orpingtons, white leghorns, & amarucanas.
