Muscovies in US - REGULATION CHANGES OPEN FOR COMMENTS - 10/1 update

well.....them ducks aren't exactly ducks, either!

BYC only has one section for laws. Perhaps the section should read Poultry Laws & Ordinances (and how to change them)

I'd vote for a section entitled Laws with separate subsections but hey that is just me.

Thank you for this. I have ordered the pliers and the bands. However, I have no idea how to apply the band. Could you either PM me or post instructions how to do this here? I have had my front tooth cracked by the wing of a large male muscovy and it certainly doesnt seem like it will be easy to put a band on and I sure do not want to get 'whacked' again.

Is there somewhere to register band numbers for 'production' flock?

I am just seeing this and am just starting with chickens and ducks. Would we be able to have baby ducks and sell them to people for a layer flock or for them to raise to butcher or is that going to be regulated? I live in farm country and that is one of the purposes of all my chickens and I was hoping muscovy's too, for meat and eggs.

To my knowledge, there are no bands, wing or leg, that can be applied without the pliers. however, the pliers, if stored properly, will last years. You can also go together with friends and order them. The bands come in 100 count.

As for applying the bands. You really just need to do trial and error. If you seal them wrong, turn the pliers over. if the numbers are upside down, don't worry. many of ours are on upside down. The ducks can't read so they really don't mind!

We use a exel program to list ALL of our poultry on with their band numbers, source, gender, name and which family member "claims" them.

Leg band # Breed LF/Bantam Variety Gender Name Exhibition Exhibitor Source

The "exhibition" is the show/fair we have/will enter them in and their winnings. The Exhibitor is the family member that claims them.

Hope this helps.

Is there a proper leg? Right? Left? Do I wrap the duck in a towel/pin him to the ground/ make someone else hold him(them) down? I am assuming the band wraps around the leg, peg in hole then crimp? How loose do i want the band?

Im sorry, but I just want to be certain I band them correctly- and also, working in the veterinary field we have had parakeets and parrots come in to have bands removed that were either too loose/tight or had gotten hung up on something and caused injury, so i am trying to avoid that. Thank you so much.

It is pets that will be illegal. Muscovies rasied for meat/eggs and exhibition will be fine, if "marked".

Is it only "pets" that were obtained after March 31, 2010? That was the original reading. Or is it now all of them?

Perhaps someone can post a topic in ducks - post a link in it to this thread, and then lock it?

I usely use the left leg, but the regulations do not state a preference. I applied them by myself. Next time someone...anyone....will help. A 20#+ Muscovy Drake is a bugger to band! There needs to be enough room to get the pliers on but not enough to slip off. Wing bands may be better for the Muscovy as they will be fine as the duck grows. Cutler has them as well. I already had the leg bands for P/T testing, so that is what I used.
