Muscovy ducks, What is a good male/ female ratio to keep?

I like it when some of the girls or drakes get into it and everyone comes around to watch and root for their favorite.

Yes, that has been my experience as well, mind you have i have the rather unusual aspect of having two buff orpingtons within this scovie flock, they definitely hold their own, they have quite bold personalities as well.

To be honest, any animals that are flock, herd, pack based etc usually have strong pecking orders and from what i understand it's an important part of the dynamics and should be left alone unless gone to extremes of coarse.

Yes, likely so, mind you i do hear them communicate with the calls now & again.. they rarely come into the yard where they are kept however. Poor confused buffy's lol

This is an interesting thread. I have 9 hens and one drake. Just some of the hens brood some of the time, which leaves him a few to be chasing around after. He´s very mild, but he has plenty of fight in him when our neighbour´s drake comes to pick a fight. I gave a number of young mixed muscovies to the neighbour the other side, they´re free-range, can come over to our fence too, but never do. They all get on together, I reckon I gave them about 4 males for eating, and about 4 females for breeding, and they already had 3. They didn´t eat the males....that leaves about one male per 2 ducks. All pretty quiet, so I reckon they must have the same disposition as the dad drake. Pretty cool. Maybe I´ll keep one or two next time around and see how they go.
