Greetings from MASSACHUSETTS!
Got four muscovies as lawn ornaments a couple of years ago- the lack of quack made them desirable with the neighbors....
Have a large black and white male- and his ladies were black/white (2) and a butterscotch female who was his least favorite .
Well, I lost one of the ducks to a coyote last thanksgiving day, and in an attempt to move their pen closer to the house to limit shoveling, I caused the other b/w duck to ignore the duckhouse ( her attitude was that's not our house... our house is over here.... hey what happened to our house... ) she flew under a streetlight ( they do this so they can see if something is coming for them) and was struck during the night, so the least favorite female is now Big Boy's main squeeze.
Before spring I hope to get a couple of additional females to take some of the mating pressure away from Butterscotch.
They were not allowed to hatch any babies this past year, but last season Butterscotch hid out and blessed us with a clutch of six, which were rehomed at the FFA poultry auction after the Fair in the fall.
He shows his mohawk without fail when I approach, either to feed or to pen them up at night. None of the females ever bit but Big Boy has nailed my legs and shoes whenever he can get away with it.
Maybe time to raise one of his sweeter sons, and retire him to freezer camp... my brother
has a better relationship with the muscovies; he brings them treats while I give them only good healthy layer pellets.
This is a great thread- sorry for no pictures, but my cameras only use film, and without a computer of my own, a digital camera seemed a waste somehow.
Maybe I'll join the 21st century soon and get both after Christmas.
