hi guys jsut wanted to ask when do your guys female muscovies start laying?

My girls started laying last year in March/April. One has not quit laying yet and her daughter (who went broody w/hidden clutch of 16eggs in Dec. till I took them fm her) looks and acts like she is going to start laying again any day now. My 3 younger girls, 5mo. old, are beginning to show that bit of an egg belly but I don't expect them to begin laying till March/April.

They ride really low in the stern.

See how G_W's chocolate hens belly rides near the ground.
And here is another example, Charlotte. Their belly will practically drag the ground.

That's a GREAT picture!! I am lucky my birds seem to stay close when they do fly. Only occasionally have I had to retrieve them from neighbor's or from our horse pastures. They seem to do a good job of watching the fence-lines?!? I have no spiders on the dormer windows of the house cause the girls get up there and de-bug everything. I originally got them for fly control and they do an AWESOME job of that!! Any flat, warm surface in Fall where the flies desperately try to stay alive that the ducks can reach are free of sleepy flies in no time. It was unnerving at first because they would be tapping along the roof and dormer windows, then you look up to see silly duck faces looking in at you in the living room!! No wonder I felt like I was being watched!!

As for the question about when these girls start to lay, I have a girl on 10 eggs right now in the barn and just found another nest that it seems one of the Scovies and the Ancona are sharing because I found 16 eggs!! Those will be our test eggs for the bator at my neighbor's house. I've had 2 eggs under the front porch from Cricket in the last week, also. Oddly, her Mama was a part of an early December hatch (but she wasn't hatched here-way too early IMO).

(just had to share this, someone just told me of a couple hatcheries that sell 'Scovy eggs)

Has anyone else seen how much McMurray sells assorted Muscovy eggs for!?!?!

$62/dozen
$120/2dozen

And I think that's without shipping!!! GEEZE! and you don't even know what you're getting!

Makes you wonder if they know somethings up that we don't. Like the outlawing(practically) of Muscovies that they were working on a year or so back. Hmmmmm! Now WHY would they be asking for such an outrageous price? This could be a great opportunity for those of us who have Scovies already orrrr a wake-up call to find out if somethings up.
