Muscovy keepers share your pics!

Here is the boy I kept from my babies. His name is RJ, Rorri Jr., because my daughter hatched him after mom left nest and I was sleeping after late shift. I was hoping for a girl that looked like him. Maybe next time.

Should have more babies in a week!

thanks for the feedback.

Has anyone tried one drake over 6 or 8?
We had one drake over 7 hens this spring. I didn't try to hatch any myself but several hens set and hatched babies. Two hatched 100% a couple hatched about 85% or 90% and one only hatched 4 out of 14 eggs. Hers were a batch of eggs that had set for over a week before I gave them to her so maybe. That had some impact.
I was kinda shocked because I thought it was too many hens for him. He seemed pretty hen pecked and I never saw them breed ever.

They are beautiful @The Moonshiner

Thank you. I thought so too so I couldn't pass them up.

My 6 yr old scovy drake had 7 females before and he was very partial to just a few so some of the girls didn't get bred often. He is getting pretty lazy now so 4 is about all he can handle matter of fact I have Runners and Buffs females he doesn't even give them a second look. LOL

The last year of my last drake life he refused to breed, he was around 12. The hens would chase him around trying to get him to do it but he just refused. Muscovy drakes seem more lazy than other duck types, and seem to do better with competition to get the job done.

I currently have 48 ducks; all 5 of my females decided that they wanted to raise families this summer! I will end up with more than 50 because Lourdes is still setting. The girls seem to have hatched their broods according to their place in the flock, and Lo is definitely the bottom girl.

They are beauties; it makes me sad to think of sending them to the butcher.

That happened to us our first year, I have since done my best to break up nests and pick up eggs daily. My comfort zone is about 8 muscovy. 50 was a bit too much for us. We butchered most too.

I managed to sell all but 3 of the last 30 babies we had. All three girls are sitting again but I think I have half taken already. Fingers crossed. Good luck!

How do you take their eggs once they decide they want to set? I tried that, taking one away after Coco had gotten 4 or 5 in the nest ("she'll never notice," I thought). She immediately went into hiding under the barn and a month later--presto!--she had 16 babies!
