Hey Muscovy peeps, I was wondering if anyone has any ideas of my birds gender now he's/she's a bit older. Scooter still cheeps to me when hug him, and I'm guessing he's a he but I thought I'd ask again. If no one knows at least he's cute, right?

Scooter hatched around July 14th. These pictures were taken a few minutes ago.

Scooter (Muscovy) and 'Ling (Mallard cross ?)

He measured about 27 inches a few inches more or less. It was hard to get a good measure as he was terrified of the tape.

Not the best reference but it was easier to put my foot by him/her than the measuring tape. I'm a size 9 ½ women's so if that helps.

Thanks for any ideas

I'm thinking drake and a very handsome one at that.

Thank you, me too but he's my first muscovy so I thought'd I'd ask around. He's my baby either way :)
They are sweet hearts, but word of caution, there will come a time when hormones kick in where they can be a royal pain and will need to either get him some girls or you'll be wishing you had. They can get pretty focused on us as their mates which can get pretty nasty. Hopefully Ling isn't the only girl.

Yeah unfortunately right now she is. She was the only egg to hatch of three, and I didn't mean to just have the one. When I autopsied the eggs one had half it's top bill missing so I guess it's good it didn't hatch… but anyways should I get him one more hen? I'd have to hand raise her though…. all of my birds I can pick up whenever I need them including my chickens...

urrghhh, is it possible for them to view a human as a mate? //I certainly hope not//
because the more I think about it, he's so affectionate to me. He nibbles my face and my ears, my hands, nibbles my back and stretches his neck out on me, nibbles not to eat or taste (because when he was younger he was so rough he would hurt my fingers and toes and left cuts on everyone) but he's gotten really really gentle to me. It's so intentional, but then he bit my mom today hard and he sometimes bites Ling like to force his dominance or she's in his space (usually the water) and he doesn't want her there. He's scared of my chickens and peep-screams and will run to me where I'll hug him until he feels better. I've had ducks before, but honestly I think these ones are more like geese. They remind me more of the geese we had when I was a kid.

It was a real struggle to get him to thrive. And I bought a diaper harness for him as a baby that he outgrew. Has anyone kept a MALE muscovy as a pet?

All my ducks to me are my pets, but I noticed with the scovies they just have diffrent personalities then the others. My one male is very care free and dosent mind people at all! But this new one still weary on... He needs to be tired out before being abled to be picked up, otherwise I think Id break something trying to hold him when hes fully charged haha. Your lucky you got to raise yours since the size of your palm!! Scovies make cute babies!!!!!!

I have thats why I cautioned you, they are wonderful animals but when the hormones kick in they get crazy, I was so worried we were going to have to put my drake down because everytime i would walk outdside he would attack me just like the drakes do the ducks, if i turned my back he was flying onto my back, it was a nightmare, lasted till we got him the new ducks. he was about 5 months old when it started. Now he is awesome to have around but believe me it was me having to be very dominant with him, when he would come for me biting my feet or legs I would either pin him down or pick him up and put him on his back. He will still get bitie but it doesn't last long, I usually just push him with my foot and he waddles on off. But they are confused and need direction. When you say he is doing this to Ling it's the Muscovy drake mating behavior they are rough and she can get hurt, and over mated too so it would be best to get him a few more ducks to lavish his attention on. I still have a great relationship with my Drake buddy but he now respects me as his keeper not a mate. Mine also was left to die by his mama that is how he ended up being raised by me and my dh for 3 months.
