Hi guys,

We have a 2 year old muscovy female, Azakah, super lovely and sweet. Bought her from a backyard breeder a year ago and she appreciated the space and freedom here with us. They free range a section of our fenced backyard. She and her sister(Neriah) joined our little flock consist of a drake(Marshie) and another female(Snowy). We spend a lot of time with our ducks, so they are all very friendly and trusting towards us, especially following my sister around when she is gardening.

Fast forward to now, we think Marshie has over mated her as it is mating season here in Australia, springtime, and she is his favourite.

About 2 weeks ago, we noticed her butt is a bit swollen so we soaked her in epsom salt warm water. She laid an egg from the first soak, which we were very glad. As the butt was still swollen, we soak her the next day, and then a last soak few days after, but no more egg.

So we treated her with oregano and tumeric/pepper for infection. It has been two weeks now and the swollen butt hasn't reduce down. At the same time, she has turned very broody, therefore not eating much. But happy to eat the herbs we mixed in with a bite of meat. Her normal diet remain the same, fed-grains and green leaves. She seems healthy apart from the swollen butt and it does look painful when she walks. We have since section her off from the others (2 weeks ago), as they all start to get broody and will give each other chases. Also to give her a rest from Marshie. She has her own area with a water pool and ground to walk around, plus a wired wall for her to be able to see the rest of her family. It has been 2 weeks and we are worried that things will start going down hill from here as she refuses to eat herbs-meat today. Hence my post today.

Any advise will be very much appreciated.

Please see attached pics. Will try to get a better picture later.

Thanks for joining! I am sorry I am not well versed in helping people treat duck problems! You could definitely post in the Duck Forum or the Emergency Forum to get the help from our best poultry First Aid Team! I really hope she gets better, she looks like a really sweet Muscovy.

There are some very nice and knowledgeable greeters that are duck people, so they might be able to help as well.

Welcome to BackYard Chickens!

Thank you Jener8or, Debbie292d & pennyJo1960.

I will post this in the Duck Forum and the ER. Thanks so much for the links, Jener8or, massive help!

Thank you for the warm welcome! My sister and I often come here to look for advises and answers when we have chicken/duck questions, and always find help in the existing forum. 3 years ago, we found the chicken pouch solution here, and our Percie is still well and alive today.

Hi guys, thank you for your time.

Unfortunately Azakar didn't make it.

Sorry to trouble you guys and for this bad news.

Darn it, I'm so sorry! It sounded like you were giving her the best care you could! She seemed like a really lovable duck, so I am sad you lost her!

It's never a trouble, and we appreciate you letting us know--that's why we're here! I hope you find peace in providing her a good and happy life!
