Hi guys,

We have a 2 year old muscovy female, Azakah, super lovely and sweet. Bought her from a backyard breeder a year ago and she appreciated the space and freedom here with us. They free range a section of our fenced backyard. She and her sister(Neriah) joined our little flock consist of a drake(Marshie) and another female(Snowy). We spend a lot of time with our ducks, so they are all very friendly and trusting towards us, especially following my sister around when she is gardening.

Fast forward to now, we think Marshie has over mated her as it is mating season here in Australia, springtime, and she is his favourite.

About 2 weeks ago, we noticed her butt is a bit swollen so we soaked her in epsom salt warm water. She laid an egg from the first soak, which we were very glad. As the butt was still swollen, we soak her the next day, and then a last soak few days after, but no more egg.

So we treated her with oregano and tumeric/pepper for infection. It has been two weeks now and the swollen butt hasn't reduce down. At the same time, she has turned very broody, therefore not eating much. But happy to eat the herbs we mixed in with a bite of meat. Her normal diet remain the same, fed-grains and green leaves. She seems healthy apart from the swollen butt and it does look painful when she walks. We have since section her off from the others (2 weeks ago), as they all start to get broody and will give each other chases. Also to give her a rest from Marshie. She has her own area with a water pool and ground to walk around, plus a wired wall for her to be able to see the rest of her family. It has been 2 weeks and we are worried that things will start going down hill from here as she refuses to eat herbs-meat today. Hence my post today.

Any advise will be very much appreciated.

Please see attached pics. Will try to get a better picture later.

I am going to tag @Miss Lydia, and hope that others will also help you. I am not familiar with ducks, but the enlarged lower belly could be water belly, reproductive infection, internal laying, or even cancer. Does it feel like fluid inside, air under the skin, or more solid? I might interrupt her from sitting on eggs, and break her for her own health, but that would be up to you. Do you have an incubator or need to hatch the eggs?

If you could answer @Eggcessive questions? Also is there any prolapse? If at all possible I’d have a vet examine her she might need a course of antibiotics in case of infection plus they should be able to tell if she is internal laying.Good idea keeping her away from the drake. Also the vet can give you info on tube feeding or show you how and possibly have all you would need to do it. They can go down pretty quick when they won’t eat.

Thank you, Eggcessive for your help and for tagging Miss Lydia.

Unfortunately, Azakar passed away sometime last night.

Thank you Miss Lydia for responding so fast.

Sorry to trouble you guys and for this bad news.
