Hello, I'm new to this forum. I am assuming I'm in the correct place. I have an issue that is upsetting me!
I have six chickens. Two barred rocks, two buff orpingtons, and two partridge cochins. I bought them as chicks (at the same time) from different feed stores here in town. They are almost 5 months old now.
I watch my chickens, quite a bit. One of my barred rocks has seemed to develop a tumor-like bump on her breast. The "tumor" is really mushy feeling. Not hard or ball-like at all.

Has anyone experienced this? Have any thoughts or ideas as to what it could be?

I was reading about Mareks and plan on evaluating all of the chickens tomorrow morning to look for any other tumors or signs of sickness.

They've seemed so happy and content. I just hope none of them are dying!
Help.

How long has she had the mushy spot? Have you considered sour crop? I've not had a chicken with sour crop, but I understand you can sometimes smell it on the chicken's breath. From your post, it seems she is otherwise acting fine. Try searching on crop issues and see if you can find something that matches what your girl has. Good luck!

I have never heard of sour crop.
I'm not sure about the length of spot. I just noticed it last night. . . now that I've noticed it I plan on paying close attention to ALL of them.
They've been acting so happy that I just didn't think anything of it. I feel terrible!

It's been a couple of days since I noticed the "tumor". I massaged her crop and gave the chickens some grit in their feed box and yard. This seems to have helped out quite a bit! I will keep a closer eye, but I think sour crop was the culprit. . . THANK GOODNESS!
