I haven't heard this question before but I've heard people talking about sneaking a day-old chick under a broody whose eggs failed to hatch. Sometimes the broody will adopt the hatchling.

Are hatchlings ever adopted by non-broody hens? Or do the non-broody hens just think of all babies who aren't "theirs" as lunch?

Sometimes even broodies won't accept chicks that aren't their own.

But when I was a kid, I saw broodies who would accept new leghorn chicks from the hatchery as their own.

my hens always accept chicks or eggs I give them when broody. I have a hen with a 2 month old chick and I tried to give her some chicks I ordered from Ideal. I stayed close by and she wouldnt have any of it she rangled her chick up and attacked the babies. I'll never try that again!
